#272- Costume Upgrade

I’ve gotten so used to drawing Vindalf with his chainmail, I forgot that he wasn’t always wearing it until issue 237. Henceforth, he is always wearing chainmail. Around that time of 2007, I also was almost always wearing chainmail. Between work at the castle and re-enacting with the SCA, I had to keep a set of garb and accessories in my car at all times. I eventually just made it into a full D&D adventuring kit; complete with 10-foot pole and 50′ of rope.

Going for the complete outfit makes it less wierd. Imagine someone walking around with a shield on the street. That’s suspicious. You add a helmet, a hauberk, and the right shoes: it’s just someone way behind the latest fashion trends.

The actors we had were great people, and I’m still friends with some of them on facebook. In general, actors only know what the encyclopedia and the script say about history. So many pet peeves of historians and re-enactors get passed on this way. I finally get the other tour guides straight on how medieval table manners work, and someone comes along with a whole bit about how Shakespeare uses “old english”- NO!

Not everybody spends hours reading scholarly articles for fun, I guess.

Casa Loma for a few years had a cool ren-faire. It was the best time of year because I got to wander the grounds in armour with a halberd as security.

For a time, they also had a deal with the local SCA. The SCA held their fight practices at the castle, and did special events for school groups, then got to use the castle for one of their events.

The catering department was outraged at the idea of bartering one night that they could sell for money. Eventually, the castle’s new catering company (installed by the evil mayor) dropped the agreement… and the castle sat empty because they couldn’t find customers. Actually, it got a lot more empty after the mayor started getting involved.

Where is #236? It was a highly specific reference to Aqua Teen Hunger Force’s marketing. I doubt anyone remembers the show, let alone that specific ad.
